First, I perceive this site as somewhere between my professional self and the rest of my self. My professional self, predominately my love of psychology, is a big part of who I am, and is reflected in my career choices. Everything I read relates to personal and spiritual growth and psychology. It’s really interesting, the day before I wrote this, while searching for a last minute gift at the book store, I read a passage from a book on Buddhism that said the goal of life is happiness. I believe this is true, but that there is more. I believe the goal for life is self actualization and enlightenment, which will contribute to happiness. And I believe I am living the dream, working toward that for myself while having careers that allow me to assist others on their path.
I have worked in the field of addiction for over 16 years, starting as a life skills counselor with only a semester of college. While working in the field I obtained an Associates Degree in Human Services, then a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. I have been a Certified Addiction Professional since 1996. And then I obtained my Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology at the age of 43, while working as an addiction counselor.
Since obtaining my Masters Degree I have become an Adjunct Professor at Florida International University, conducting a social psychology course in drugs and drug abuse, and at Nova Southeastern University, conducting psychology courses in substance abuse and the family, interpersonal communication, and the physiology and psychology of drugs.
At the same time, I more often feel like a blue collar guy who has read a lot about psychology, philosophy, and self-improvement. I believe this is evident in my treatment approach. My clients have joked that they could tell my colleague is a therapist if she were walking around the neighborhood, but a stranger might not know I was the therapist if they walked into group.
