I recently got turned onto a band called “Eels.” (despite their being mainstream since 1996). They are described as Alternative Pop / Rock, Post Grunge, or Adult Alternative Pop /Rock (the last of which I never heard of). Although you may have never heard of them, you likely have heard their music in movies such as “Yes Man,” “Shrek,” “American Beauty,” “Knocked Up,” “Holes,” ”Hot Fuzz,”  or “Hell Boy II.” Many of their songs reference death or discuss the pain inherent in life. Some have a sardonic tone. But one, in its description by Wikipedia (I know, not a great reference) is a “reflect[ion of] the worldview of a man emerging from depression.” Although there are songs of theirs I find more enjoyable, this song seems to depict some of the existential philosophies I have written about and am advocating. I believe that it is a song about someone coming to embrace life. Recently while watching the DVD “Seven Pounds” the lead character was explaining what he wanted from someone he was helping. At the end, he added “and of course (for you) to live life abundantly.” That is my wish for all, that you are able to embrace your life and enjoy it, to embrace the pain (like the first line of the song) and the joy. That is what much of my writing is about.

The song is called “Hey Man (Now you’re Really Living)” and here are the lyrics.

Do you know what it’s like to fall on the floor
And cry your guts out ’til you got no more
Hey man now you’re really living

Have you ever made love to a beautiful girl
Made you feel like it’s not such a bad world
Hey man now you’re really living

Now you’re really giving everything
And you’re really getting all you gave
Now you’re really living what
This life is all about

Well i just saw the sun rise over the hill
Never used to give me much of a thrill
But hey man now you’re really living

Do you know what it’s like to care too much
’bout someone that you’re never gonna get to touch
Hey man now you’re really living

Have you ever sat down in the fresh cut grass
And thought about the moment and when it will pass
Hey man now you’re really living

Now you’re really giving everything
And you’re really getting all you gave
Now you’re really living what
This life is all about

Now what would you say if i told you that
Everyone thinks you’re a crazy old cat
Hey man now you’re really living

Do you know what it’s like to fall on the floor
And cry your guts out ’til you got no more
Hey man now you’re really living

Have you ever made love to a beautiful girl
Made you feel like it’s not such a bad world
Hey man now you’re really living

People sing
Do you know what it’s like to fall on the floor
And cry your guts out ’til you got no more
Hey man now you’re really living

Just saw the sun rise over the hill
Never used to give me much of a thrill
But hey man now i’m really living

That song is also played in the movie “What happens in Vegas”. Great song! I also applaud your efforts conveying the message :)

I wonder what it is about their music that results in their being put in so many movies? Maybe its the depth of their lyrics. But there are many artists I listen to with depth in their lyrics that aren’t in many movies. Interesting.
Thank you for the comment and compliment.
