September, Thoughts For…

30. Love life and life will love you back. Love people and they will love you back. Arthur Rubinstein

29. All phenomena of existence have mind as their precursor, mind as their supreme leader, and of mind they are made. Buddha

28. Coming to an understanding of Tao is to realize a wellspring of purity within yourself. When you taste of that purity there is no comparison between the goodness of the spirit and the sins of our addiction. Deng Ming-Dao

27. We should find perfect existence through imperfect existence. Shunryu Suzuki

26. There is, however, a strong empirical reason why we should cultivate thoughts that can never be proved. It is that they are known to be useful. Man positively needs general ideas and convictions that will give a meaning to his life and enable him to find a place in the universe. Carl Jung – Man and His Symbols

25. You are not depressed… just distracted, distracted by life. Distracted from the life that surrounds you, dolphins, forests, seas, mountains, rivers. Facundo Cabral

A former student sent me a link to a translation of this Argentinian Poet and songwriters writing. I read a bit about him, and although many here in the states have likely not heard of him (I didn’t) he seemed a remarkable human. He was homeless for some of his childhood, looking for work at age 9. He lost his wife and children in a plane crash, survived cancer, and suffered other physical ailments. Yet he maintained a positive attitude up until he was murdered (seemingly mistakenly) in July.

Try to enjoy the beauty around you today…

24. People spend a lifetime searching for happiness; looking for peace. They chase idle dreams, addictions, religions, even other people, hoping to fill the emptiness that plagues them. The irony is the only place they ever needed to search was within. Ramona L. Anderson

23. Live aligned with what is, so that nothing you do is a means to an end, but is the end itself… be fully in the doing of what you are doing. Eckhart Tolle

22. For those who follow Tao, emptiness is as critical as fullness. Deng Ming-Dao

20. More stuff is not the answer. Wm. Berry

19. That which is obtained through delusive craving is not obtained. Zen Master Deshan Xuanjian

18. The whole conviction of my life now rests upon the belief that loneliness, far from being a rare and curious phenomenon, peculiar to myself and to a few other solitary men, is the central and inevitable fact of human existence. Thomas Wolfe

17. We’re born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we’re not alone. Orson Wells

16. Remember we’re all in this alone. Lilly Tomlin

15. ’Cause only life, yeah only life has loneliness to sell. So celebrate, yeah live your life, live it and raise hell. The true prophet never spoke, He just smiled and saw the joke. And this present state of grace we creatures need. Yeah, it’s this present state of grace we creatures need. Flogging Molly

14. Your death, like your life, is unique and yours alone. No person or thing can save you from that. Nor should you want them to. Wm. Berry

13. How do you let go of attachment to things? Don’t even try. It’s impossible. Attachment to things drops away by itself when you no longer seek to find yourself in them. E. Tolle

12. I never give them hell. I just tell the truth and they think it’s hell. Harry S. Truman

11. The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government. Thomas Jefferson

I thought this an appropriate quote about compassion on this day.

9. When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be. Lao Tzu

8. Each of us literally chooses, by his way of attending to things, what sort of universe he shall appear to himself to inhabit. William James

7. Allow your bowl to be filled, but do not become attached to the contents. Empty your bowl, but do not become attached to the emptiness. Unknown

6. Hold fast the time! Guard it, watch over it, every hour, every minute. Unregarded it slips away…Hold every moment sacred. Give each clarity and meaning, each the weight of thine awareness each its true and due fulfillment. Thomas Mann

5. If you sense there is a natural, breathing flow to life and you want to live in harmony with that, then Tao is for you. Deng Ming-Dao

4. Just surrender to the cycle of things. Give yourselves to the wave of the Great Change. Neither happy nor afraid. And when it is time to go, simply go – without any unnecessary fuss. T’ao Ch’ien

3. Wonder is the feeling of the philosopher, and philosophy begins in wonder. Plato

1. But some emotions don’t make a lot of noise. It’s hard to hear pride. Caring is real faint – like a heartbeat. And pure love why, some days it’s so quiet, you don’t even know it’s there. Erma Bombeck
